HERE’S WHAT’S NEW ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO IN JULY

I am grateful for the silence of winter mornings, for the beauty and wonder of the glint of sunlight in frost melting to dew, for the early-riser's peaceful solitude that sets a mood of thankfulness, hope, and calm for the dawning day.

July means a lot of things: A new crop of movies and shows on Amazon that give you an excuse to sit in front of your air conditioner and not move.

If you were hoping to binge watch TV shows through July, you might consider investing in a Netflix account; the new batch of shows coming to Amazon in July is small and lacks many standouts. The obvious highlight is season 2 of Mr. Robot, the acclaimed techno-thriller about cyber security expert/hacker Elliot Alderson (Rami Malik), who joins a group of vigilante hackers hoping to overthrow corporate America.

If you want something to watch with your kids — and don’t want them getting any ideas about toppling the financial industry — you may like Niko and the Sword of Light, an animated adventure series which must embark on a lengthy journey through strange lands and overcome various obstacles.

While Amazon’s July TV selection is weak, there are quite a few great movies. The biggest addition is The Salesman, a film from Iranian director AsgharFarhadi that won awards for Best Screenplay and Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival, as well an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. The film follows a married couple, Emad (ShahabHosseini) and Rana (TaranehAlidoosti), whose lives are upturned when someone sneaks into their new apartment and assaults Rana. The fallout from the attack, and their attempts to deal with it, make for a heavy, well-acted drama.

If you enjoy tense horror movies, check out Rosemary’s Baby, a classic film about a pregnant woman whose new neighbors may not be all they appear. Fans of Westerns will be overjoyed to see The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Sergio Leone’s iconic film about three men racing to find a buried cache of Confederate gold.

Sci-fi fans will be overjoyed to hear that Amazon’s July additions include the first nine Star Trek movies. While not all of these films are great, entries like The Wrath of Khan and First Contact are among the best Star Trek stories.
